Concentration and water reclamation in a non-biological, compact system

FORWARD OSMOSIS

Key Features

Anti-Fouling, High-Flux Membrane

Fouling resistant Forward Osmosis process isolates traditional Reverse Osmosis membranes from wastewater

Minimal pre-filtration required

Our open-channel FO membranes can handle wastewater with suspended solids and dissolved organic matter.

Flexible and Tunable

Our systems are highly tunable to handle variations in wastewater composition and flow rates while maintaining high permeate recovery and efficiency.

Highly Automated

Our systems are fully automated so there is little operator attention required. They are also remotely accessible and we provide data logging solutions through our online DO Metrics platform.

How it Works

Step 1: Forward Osmosis

Raw, screened, or filtered liquid is first passed through the Forward Osmosis (FO) membrane stacks, where 50-95% of the water is removed by passing through the membrane and into a salt water solution. The concentrate exits the FO system and can be collected in a tank nearby.

Step 2: Reverse Osmosis

The salt water is then processed by RO membranes to generate clean water and brine. The brine is passed back through the FO system continuously.

Step 3: Clean Water Discharge

Clean water is continuously discharged from the RO system and can be stored onsite for reuse or discharged.

Ideal for: Brewery Wastewater, Ultrafiltered Manure, Leachates, Low-TSS Wastewaters

How does FO Compare to RO alone?

Process Dirtier Water

With our open channel FO, anti-fouling membrane, and low pressure system, the FO can handle much dirtier water than a traditional RO. This reduces the need for pre-filtration and allows concentration of liquids with high levels of dissolved organic matter.

Achieve higher permeate recovery

Using FO-RO allows increased permeate recovery and smaller volumes of concentrate that require additional processing or disposal.

Produce Cleaner Water

FO-RO makes cleaner final effluent compared to RO alone since water goes through both the FO and RO membrane, not just one RO membrane. Water can be used as boiler feed water, animal drinking water, or directly discharged.

Extend Membrane Life

Because wastewater or process liquid rich in organics does not contact the RO membranes, cleaning requirements are significantly diminished. Fewer cleanings means extended membrane life and reduced downtime.
