In some rural parts of the country where livestock farming is prevalent, drinking water sources have been found to be contaminated with high levels of nitrate and various pathogens. Although the precise causes of this ground water contamination remain controversial and will be investigated for years to come, there is evidence to suggest that the storage and land spreading of untreated manure may play a roll in certain situations. For example, according to the recent Wall Street Journal article Farms, More Productive Than Ever, Are Poisoning Drinking Water in Rural America, “the frequency with which pathogens including E. coli, Salmonella, rotavirus and cryptosporidium occur in water [in Kewanee County, WI,] is similar to what researchers might expect to find in some developing countries.”

We at Digested Organics believe that communities affected by groundwater contamination should know there are solutions available to help improve manure management in ways that can preserve ground water quality. Digested Organics has solutions for both small and large farms, in addition to farms that already have a digester.

Our stainless steel ultrafiltration system removes nearly all pathogens, phosphorus, and organic nitrogen from manure, allowing farms to apply a transparent liquid filtrate that will not contaminate nearby wells with pathogens but still helps farmers supply needed nitrogen and potassium to crops.  This filtrate can be further purified into clean water and a second concentrated fertilizer with our combination of forward and reverse osmosis technologies. Combined, these systems can turn manure into water clean enough for animals to drink or to directly discharge into nearby streams and rivers.
